Classes at LittleQuills
Ages 8-16 | Start Anytime | Personalized Lessons
LittleQuills offers personalized writing instruction using the Structure and Style® approach, developed by the Institute for Excellence in Writing. Each lesson is tailored to the student’s level, pace, and needs, helping them build confidence and strong writing skills step by step.
Students may begin at any time during the year, and scheduling is flexible.
Writing Pathways
LittleQuills offers two complementary writing programs, allowing students to grow from foundational skills to advanced thinking and expression.
Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW)
IEW provides students with clear structure and tools that make writing approachable and rewarding. Lessons focus on building strong paragraphs, stylistic techniques, and confidence.
Curriculum Options
Lessons are selected based on the student’s age, experience, and interests.
Fairy Tales and Fables (Grades 3–5)
Students develop foundational writing skills through classic stories. This is a gentle and engaging introduction for younger writers.
History-Based Writing (Grades 4–10)
Students write about meaningful historical topics while learning summaries, paragraph structure, and style.
Topics may include:
Ancient History
Medieval History
U.S. History
and other history-based themes
Grammar Support
Grammar is taught naturally within each student’s writing instruction. Students learn to edit and improve their work while strengthening punctuation, capitalization, and sentence structure.
When additional support is helpful, lessons may incorporate Fix It! Grammar to reinforce these skills in a clear, supportive way.
Lost Tools of Writing (Grades 7–12)
LittleQuills also offers instruction in Lost Tools of Writing, an advanced program that helps students grow into thoughtful, persuasive writers.
Students learn to:
Think deeply about literature
Develop clear arguments
Write strong, persuasive essays
Participate in meaningful discussion
Families may:
Form small groups with friends and help select the literature, or
Choose personalized one-on-one instruction
Lost Tools of Writing is an excellent next step for students who have completed IEW or are ready for deeper academic writing.
Instruction Options
LittleQuills offers flexible formats to meet each family’s needs:
• Private one-on-one lessons
• Sibling classes
• Small groups formed by families
• Lost Tools of Writing groups or private instruction
Flexible Enrollment
Students may begin anytime during the year. Instruction is personalized, allowing each student to progress with confidence.
