Why Grammar Matters Beyond the Worksheet
Grammar becomes more meaningful when students can use it in real writing. Rather than learning rules in isolation, students begin seeing how grammar shapes clear communication and stronger writing.
Over the years, I’ve found that one of the most helpful moments for students happens during editing. Because I teach grammar alongside writing, students have opportunities to apply grammar concepts directly to their assignments.
During editing, we might stop and ask questions such as:
✓ Is this a preposition or an adverbial clause?
✓ Is this a phrase or a clause?
✓ Will the punctuation change based on the sentence structure?
✓ Does this sentence communicate the idea clearly?
Students begin to see that editing is more than correcting mistakes. Editing helps strengthen sentences, improve clarity, and communicate ideas more effectively.
